Grove optimistic about getting Pre-K Counts program going

Valley Grove School Board members discussed the school district’s Pre-K program during the panel’s meeting Monday.

The board approved advertising the program during the 2022-23 school year, and Superintendent Kevin Briggs said there will be about 15-17 Pre-K Counts seats available.

The state will reimburse a certain amount of money for each child and will also reimburse families depending on their income.

Briggs said the district is trying to fund children who don’t qualify for the reimbursement through the COVID-related ESSER schools relief fund.

“The goal is to not turn anyone down,” Briggs said.

“We would love to have more kids in the district,” school board member Cindy Swendsen added.

The school board is hoping to have two classes to start with and then have an additional 15-17 seats at least the following year, Briggs said.

Children who are four years old and will enter kindergarten the following year are qualified for the program.

Swendsen said she is “so excited” about the program because it has been discussed for years and is finally ready to start.

In other business at Monday’s meeting, Jodee Raybuck, regional manager for The Nutrition Group, said she isn’t sure if the district will be able to continue free meals for students next year.

District students have been receiving free meals because of the pandemic.

In another matter, Briggs told the board there are no updates or changes regarding the pandemic and the district is on its fourth week of not having any cases.
