‘Every animal has a home out there’

Precious Paws Animal Rescue in Franklin shared the background of two feline Seniors for Seniors placements.

Izzy and Blossom were placed late last year and earlier this year at the Sugar Valley Lodge facility in Polk.

“Izzy actually was a stray cat that we took in who was very affectionate and was just obviously well suited for life at the care centers,” Theresa Weldon said.

Weldon said Blossom came from a hoarding case.

“She was adopted and then returned to us because of family issues out of her control,” Weldon said.

Precious Paws has placed a total of four cats in two facilities and would love to place more.

Smudge

Smudge

“I currently have Smudge, the world’s friendliest cat, who was from an Oil City abuse case.  But, like most animals, he harbors nothing but love towards humans,” Weldon said.

Smudge loves sleeping in boxes, probably from his days of being an outdoor kitty left to fend for himself, according to a Petfinder listing.

Smudge is missing toes on his back leg.

“Since we’ve had him, Smudge has doubled his body weight. He is very mellow, affectionate and really loves people, which is amazing in of itself considering his life before PPAR,” the Petfinder listing said.

Weldon also provided more details about the PPAR’s Seniors for Seniors program.

The program was started as a means of doing two things: No. 1 finding good long-term homes for older adult animals that have the right personality to live in a group environment and No. 2 providing companionship and emotional support that only an animal can provide to residents who may have had to lose their own animals when relocating to the facility, Weldon said.

PPAR provides the facilities with a fully vetted adult cat.

“We pay for the initial vetting and all subsequent medical care for the life of the pet.  The residence pays for cat litter and food and provides care for the cat,” Weldon said. “We are also willing to offer cats with a waived adoption fee to elderly people who want a companion but are on a limited budget.”

“Every animal has a home out there. Sometimes we just have to be creative in finding it,” she added.

Look before you mow

Skye’s Spirit Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Harrisville posted a reminder to check the yard before starting the mower.

“This is the time of year we get lots of lawn mower accidents. With a lot of rain sometimes the grass gets too long and these youngsters are hiding,” the center said in a Facebook post.

“This cottontail just emerging from its nest lost an entire leg to a mower. It was in shock upon arrival,” the post continued. “We’ve removed the last of the bone fragments and is on pain meds and antibiotics. We’ll watch for balance and mobility issues, but we’ve released three legged ones before and they’re just as fast,” the center said.

The center said to try to keep lawns short or do a walk around before mowing long grasses.

“It will help keep this from happening,” the center said.

People may donate to the injured rabbits care and other wildlife recovering at the center by visiting the center’s website, www.skyes-spirit.com.
