Intermediate unit offers adult classes, seeks tutors

From staff reports

The Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit No. 5 adult education and career readiness program is accepting enrollments for free adult education classes.

The unit offers a variety of opportunities for people who want to improve their basic skills to earn a diploma, transition to college, change careers or advance in their present job.

Classes are available in 14 locations across Erie, Warren and Venango counties.

Classes include basic reading, writing and math skills; GED/HiSet exam preparation; workplace readiness skills; algebra I and II; and English as a Second Language.

Class locations include Oil City and Franklin. Daytime, afternoon and evening class times are available. Distance learning options are also available.

All classes and materials are provided at no cost to students.

To register or to learn more, visit www.iu5.org or call (800) 677-5610, Ext. 7095. IU5 staff will help students select a class and set up a date for orientation.

The intermediate unit is also seeking volunteer tutors for its adult education and career readiness program. Tutors will work alongside IU5’s certified teachers to provide one-on-one or small group instruction to adult learners. Virtual tutoring opportunities are also available.

Volunteer tutors must have a bachelor’s degree – or be working toward a four-year degree – and must pass child abuse and criminal background checks.

A minimum three hours per week is required, with a one-year commitment.
